What I Wore Wednesday

I missed WIWW last week! We had some nasty cold weather, and I guess I was pouting about having to drag out my winter coat again. Things are looking up though! Weather-wise, Easter weekend was a little unpredictable. I was determined to wear skirts and dresses, but ended up changing my clothes multiple times. Oh well...that's prone to happening on the best of weather days, anyway.

This is actually a strapless dress with a gingham pattern (tough to see in the pic, I know). It's much more summery sans sweater!

I'm wearing:
Black cardigan: Kohls, $3
Strapless red dress: Goodwill, $6
Red belt: Goodwill, $1
Black flats: Steve Madden via St. Vincent de Paul, $3

Spring Semester- almost over!

I've got lots of posts that I can't wait to get out, but I'm in the final two weeks of the spring semester and am suddenly very busy scrambling to get some homework-style projects done! Expect to see more posts soon!

Learning Calligraphy (and patience and motivation, too)

What do you do when you have trouble getting motivated on projects? I've been feeling a little down lately, and my boyfriend, Geoff, suggested I try something new. I love sewing and doing crafts, but sometimes it's easy to get discouraged, put something down, and never get back to it. A few weeks ago when we were wandering through Blick, coveting all of the neat art supplies, and wishing we knew how to "do art," I picked up a pen and nib set, and a bottle of ink and decided I would try calligraphy.

It's not easy! My first attempts are a little embarrassing. But so far I love it. It really forces me to be patient, which is something I struggle with a lot in my crafting and sewing. I'm very prone to rushing through a project and hating what it looks like at the end.

Even though struggling through a new hobby might be the last thing my busy schedule needs right now, I'm enjoying myself, and feeling a little more motivated to tackle some other projects, too. Yesterday I even finished my Anda-like Butterick dress (pictures to come soon). I know, I know, it's supposed to be a "one-hour" project, but what can I say? I've always been intimidated by patterns.

Do you have any suggestions for a new calligrapher? I've been using this website to start practicing some letters, and just got Lettering & Calligraphy Workbook by The Diagram Group in the mail today. Any suggestions would be super!

New Bookshelf with Cubbies!

I've been living in a terribly cluttered craft-sewing-clothing-homework explosion. Sometimes dirty dishes get mixed in there as well. The thing is, it's really hard to organize a small space that needs to house so many different activities. I finally decided I need a little more storage space in my room, and bought a little bookshelf with cubbies from Target.

I can't bear to show you a before picture of what this looked like. But I like it much better now!

I might get (or make) some little bins for some more stashing and I still have to get pictures of my actual family into that frame. For now, though, I'm just relishing the organizational improvement.

P.S. If the picture looks crooked...it's because my floor slopes. Really. A lot.

What I Wore Wednesday

I'm breaking some of my personal "rules" in this episode of What I Wore Wednesday. I never wear anything high waisted and I rarely tuck my shirt in unless I'm going to an interview or something. Both of these are rules I've vaguely followed since high school, so I guess it's probably time to retire them.

Maybe it's my happiness at the summer weather and finally being able to wear dresses and skirts again, but I loved wearing this all day. And I love that the skirt has pockets!

Maybe I should start calling WIWW "thrifty fashion day" or something. I think almost every day I've got a couple of thrifted or clearance items...or both...taking center stage.

I'm wearing:
White Scoopneck Tee: Kohls, $4
Red Cardigan: Goodwill, $6
Black Skirt: Kohls, $9
Black Flats: Steve Madden via St. Vincent de Paul, $3

Sweet Links Saturday: Dress Tutorials!

In honor of the warmer weather, I thought I'd share some great dress tutorials with you guys.

Disney (who always has amazing ideas at tutorials) at Ruffles And Stuff uses ruffled fabric to make a very versatile dress or skirt.

Check out this cool draped dress tutorial at SewPetiteGal. I think I'm going to try it once I get some more fabric, but with a shorter length.

There are so many great men's shirt tutorials out there. Holly at Holly Do uses two men's shirts to make one cute dress!

Which great tutorials have I missed? Share some with me in the comments!

Project Friday: Necklace Organizer

This isn't a groundbreaking project, but sometimes the easy ones are the best ones. Ignore the plaster issues on the wall, that's just part of the..charm...of this apartment.

I started with this bulletin board strip that I randomly picked up for 50 cents at St. Vincent de Paul.

The floral print is actually ribbon from my stash. I didn't even cut or trim it; I thought it was a pretty good width for the bulletin board strip. I held it on with some fancy pushpins, which also hold up the necklaces. There you go- super easy necklace holder. Use any kind of ribbon, fabric, or paper to customize!

What I Wore Wednesday

Did you link up to The Pleated Poppy this week for What I Wore Wednesday? I did!

Getting dressed is a lot more fun now that I don't have to bundle up in several layers in order to get outside. But I'm totally bummed that the purpleness of my tights didn't really show up in these pictures! Trust me, they're a lot more vivid in real life.

Today was also the first day that I didn't wear a winter coat. Hurray!

I'm wearing:
White Scoopneck Tee: Kohls, $4
Grey Cardigan: Kohls, ?? a few years ago
Polka Dot Skirt: St. Vincent de Paul, 75 cents
Purple Tights: Forever 21, $4
Black flats: Rummage Sale, $1

Projects in the Works

I know I'd usually have a Project Tuesday lined up for today, but I've got a lot of half-starts instead! On the weekend, I scored several yards of fabric at St. Vincent de Paul, and I'm using some yellow gingham to make this Butterick pattern (on sale for $1 at Joanns), which is very similar to Burda's Anda.  I hope to have it finished and up on the blog soon! Did you make it, or Anda? Leave me a comment and let me know how it went!

I know that I've said I don't do patterns, but since I've got my dress form (and since I'm hoping to spend most of the warm summer wearing dresses), I figured I'd give it ago. I thought this "one-hour pattern" would be a good trial run!

On other notes, the semester's getting really busy, with lots of homework and projects coming up. Lots of non-homework craft/sewing projects, though, including a couple more dresses, are on my to-do list for when things settle down! I'm looking forward to getting outside today, too. Sunny with a high of 54 sounds great.

Sweet Links Saturday: Tasty Treats

I keep saving recipes. Sometimes I make them, sometimes I don't. These definitely look delicious!

Chocolate Bread by Purple Chocolate Home. Can't wait to try this one!

I know it's April now, not March, but here's a new kind of Shamrock Shake. It's got spinach in it!
