Project Tuesday: Refitted Men's Shirt

My dad gave me this old flannel shirt of his a long time ago, and I decided to use my serger and refit it to my size, since it's super comfortable, but obviously unwearable. It worked out pretty well, once I got the serger threaded correctly again. I did it wrong the first time and it kept unthreading itself. Oops.

It wasn't a difficult project. I used my favorite trick and used a button down shirt of mine that does fit as a pattern to trace. The shoulders were also way too big, so I cut off the sleeves and reattached them. I decided to use a shorter, more feminine length, too. Next time I'll work harder at making the shirt as a whole more feminine, adding darts and a more girlish shape to it. I'm kind of liking how it looks with this overstated brown belt.

You can do this without a serger, but you'll have to finish your new inside edges to keep them from fraying. A zig zag stitch should do the trick, and you'll have a brand new shirt!

  1. This turned out really cute. I love how you did the sleeves! I have been doing a lot of refashioning projects. It is kind of my new hobby. I think I need to check out my husband's closet for some shirts.

  17. What a super reinvention. I love the shirt style that is a little longer, but I can never find ones that fit properly. I have never thought of just fitting one for myself. Thank you for sharing this with us.

  34. very nice! And it makes a lot of sense. I've run into quite a few toddlers' dresses that feature detachable collars. I have never actually finished one that way and sewed them in place instead. I assume it was either for similar reasons or to make one dress into two.
