Get rid of one thing every day

I recently read (well, skimmed) The Joy of Less: A Minimalist Living Guide.  One piece of advice that stuck with me is to purge one item every day- even if it's just a sock without a mate. You can read more about that philosophy from the author's blog.

I think this is good advice. Sometimes I can go on a decluttering spree and fill up a laundry basket without a second thought. But sometimes, it's overwhelming to look at an overflowing closet- and an item a day is all I'm up for.

Here's my item-a-day count for the past 7 days:

From top left:

  • Thrifted handbag that's just not something I use, although I like it (I prefer a shoulder or cross-body bag)
  • Tea strainer- really small and tough to clean, although it's cute.
  • Tiny pink flower pot whose plant was recently repotted. Way too small for anything I'd actually plant.
  • Thrifted glass pitcher- Geoff has a nearly identical one which we like better.
  • Polka dot belt which came with a recent ModCloth purchase- very poor quality and doesn't stay on (no reason to keep!)
  • Blue scarf from a garage sale box of fabric- I've never worn it.
  • Three excess ice cube trays- there's already three in use in the freezer.

Usually I bring a box or carload over to Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul, but I'm thinking about taking some of my recent purges to a consignment shop instead. Most of the clothes I'm thrifting this time around are in great shape and I might be able to get some money for them. Does anyone have a favorite place to get rid of still-good items?
